I am excluding from this list books which fall under the category of "weren't my favourite, but I'm glad I've read," "were well written but I still feel disturbed by them 20 years later & I really don't think the author had any business making me cry like that," & "random bestsellers people handed me when I was getting into reading which are too forgettable to warrant an inclusion on this list even though I didn't like them."
Therefore books like Gandhi's Autobiography, A Fine Balance, Of Mice and Men & random John Grishams or similar are not listed.
The books below, for various reasons, I struggled to get through. For the literature in translation, we can give it the benefit of the doubt and say perhaps that the translation was no good- but that does not change my experience reading it.
For the record, I like World Lit, Autobiographies, Lefty-Political-Non-Fiction, Existentialist Lit, Murder-Mysteries, Horror, and Speculative Fiction.
Bastard out of Carolina: good but way too sad4me.
