"Horror movies have been around for much longer than just the dawn of the 21st century; some of the earliest silent movie classics were horror movies (see 'Nosferatu', which is still pretty creepy and 100+ years old), and then later decades saw undeniable masterpieces like 'Psycho', 'The Exorcist', 'Jaws', and 'The Thing' all get released. It's an interesting genre to track in the present, though, because while the classics are great, what is or isn't scary can change over the course of many years, and differing generations. Also, those who make horror movies have to find different ways to push boundaries and unsettle viewers, many of whom might otherwise feel like they've seen it all (and, like, jump scares, after a while, do largely stop being effective, if you've seen a fair few horror movies, for example).
