Winter writes: "The following list of approximately 150 books is intended to provide a comprehensive, if occasionally idiosyncratic, reader's guide to the best of the modern generation of horror fiction. My definition of horror--which, like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's definition of obscenity, is to know it when I see it--embraces authors and titles that some readers may identify with other genres. The only limitation I have observed is to restrict my selections to no more than five titles from any individual author."
