"...compiling this feature...gave us the opportunity to look back at decades of musicals, has reminded us of how much this quintessentially American, frequently lightweight and often-disparaged genre has meant to us over the years. Turns out, we love musicals, and musicals are kind of what we need right now. It has also highlighted some blind spots, though. Most egregious is the fact that no Bollywood movies appear, and considering how many of them are musicals, we can only plead the excuse that Bollywood isn't simply another national cinema, but an incredibly populous, massive industry with its own aesthetic and narrative rules, and we frankly didn't know where to start. In fact, looking outside the borders of America in general wasn't particularly fruitful — the movie musical is so very, deeply American, after all.
