The Signet Shakespeare Library

I had the great good fortune to attend Tufts University when Sylvan Barnet was the Shakespearean expert in residence. Not only was I instructed by him, but I also was introduced to the complete line of Paperback editions that he edited for the New American Library. (There is also an OOP AND VERY HARD TO FIND HARDCOVER textbook edition of the complete works, which is included as item #1.) While there are many fine editions available, I've always preferred the Signets- the editing and annotations are clear and easy to follow, and the scholarly apparatus is extensive without being intrusive. Moreover, they are the only General series that provides in-depth information about performance of all the plays. Now that Dr. Barnet has passed on, I sincerely hope that Penguin, the current owner of the Signet line, does not decide to discontinue it. That would be shame, a true disservice to students and general readers
