Massive granite mountains, towering waterfalls, groves of Giant Sequoia trees, and wilderness as far as the eye can see distinguish the landscape of Yosemite National Park. There isn't just one icon by which the park defines itself; visitors divide their attention between the smooth, round, and colossal face of Half Dome, the sheer cliff of El Capitan, the striking Upper Yosemite Falls, the mighty Vernal Falls, and the widely stretched Yosemite Valley. This landscape draws outdoor enthusiasts with its array of hiking trails, rock-climbing routes, and fishing rivers and streams. Casual visitors feel at home here too, thanks to the handful of paved roads that provide easy vehicle access to numerous vista points and trailheads. Yosemite sees 3.7 million visitors per year on average, but 95% of the park is wilderness that offers the opportunity to glimpse black bears, bighorn sheep, and mountain lions.
