Time Out's 50 Greatest Foreign Films

Don't fear subtitles. They're your friends. Some of cinema's best feminist films and thriller movies come from foreign films. These classics also deliver—in the best of cases—a universe of nuance that you can only get from opening your eyes and ears to a world beyond your borders. Nervous about the journey? Two caveats: We haven't included any silent films (sorry, Metropolis) and the movies had to be in a language that wasn't English, so you won't find any British or Australian picks.
