A girl group is a music act featuring female singers who generally harmonize. "Girl Group" is also used in a narrower sense in the US to denote the wave of American female singing groups, who were influenced by doo-wop & flourished in the late '50s & early '60s between the decline of early rock & roll and the British Invasion. All-female bands, in which members also play instruments, are usually considered a separate phenomenon. These groups are sometimes called "girl bands" to differentiate. With the advent of the music industry and radio broadcasting in the '40s several girl groups emerged, like the Andrews Sisters. The late '50s saw the emergence of girl groups as a major force, with 750 girl groups releasing songs reaching US & UK charts from '60 to '66. The Supremes alone had 12 #1 singles on the Hot 100 during the height of the wave and throughout most of the British Invasion rivaled the Beatles in popularity.
