UVA English Major Suggested Reading - Page 4

As an English major at the University of Virginia in the early 1980's, we were given this list of suggested readings to acquire an educated perspective on English, American and comparative literature.
"As you read, remember that we offer this list only as a starting point. One good book leads to another. With this basic list, we hope to set you off on your own, to satisfy your individual curiosity about literature beyond anyone else's list."
The list is divided in categories:
1) Classical Backgrounds (#1-32)
2) Comparative Literature (#33-122)
3) English and American Literature
.......a) Prose Fiction (#123-159)
.......b) Poetry (#160-184)
.......c) Drama (#185-213)
