Vice-Presidents Who Later Became President (United States)

In the United States, it is often assumed that a sitting Vice-President has a clear shot for the Top Job. This is not necessarily the case. Four Vice-Presidents became President because of assassination; four due to natural death; and one by resignation. Vice-Presidents who were actually elected in their own right have been fairly rare (although some did win re-election at a later date.)
