"When a woman kisses a woman in a movie, it might be an integral scene that advances the story—or it might just be two hot chicks kissing. But when a man kisses a man, it's almost always done as a major plot point, or to get squirming laughs from the audience. Major stars are certainly willing to play homosexuals, e.g. Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas in Philadelphia, but they rarely agree to demonstrate any kind of physical affection. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane swished all over the screen in The Birdcage, but they hardly ever touched one another.
But there are some brave exceptions."
