The Clash were an English band formed in London in 1976 who were key in the original wave of British punk rock. Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", they also contributed to the postpunk & new wave movements that emerged in the punk's wake and employed elements of reggae, dub, funk, ska & rockabilly. They achieved critical & commercial UK success w/their 1977 self-titled debut album, then w/their 2nd, Give 'Em Enough Rope (1978). Their 3rd album, London Calling, released in the UK in Dec. 1979, earned them US fame when released there the next month. It's since been named the best album of the '80s by Rolling Stone. Musical growth continued on their 4th, Sandinista! (1980) and the band reached new heights w/the 5th Combat Rock (1982), spawning the US top 10 "Rock the Casbah". In 2003, the band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the Clash #28 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
