Classic New Wave Near-Hits According to Schlocko

Here are some of the most iconic and beloved songs of the New Wave era (roughly 1978-1984). And not one of them made the US Top 40, although some charted in other countries, and a couple of these artists had bigger hits with less distinctive songs later in the decade. (Squeeze, for example, got to #49 with "Tempted" but hit the top 20 with "Hourglass." Do you remember "Hourglass?" Can you forget "Tempted?") That such classic songs should languish in the lower reaches of the Billboard charts while the Safety Dance was bip-bip-bopping out of car radios across America testifies to the importance of gimmicks in pop music.
