Despite its status as the third-smallest US state, over 400 bird species have been seen in Connecticut. The Long Island Sound along its southern border provides nesting, wintering or stopover habitat for numerous waterbirds at all times of year, with endangered Piping Plovers and Roseate Terns among the nesting species. Forests in the interior are home to the typical breeding songbirds of the northeast, plus a few specialties from further south like Acadian Flycatcher and Louisiana Waterthrush. The state even has its own namesake bird, the Connecticut Warbler, but like many warblers named after places, the Connecticut is only a rare passage migrant migrant through the state.
