Goodreads Best German/Austrian/Swiss Literature - Page 5

"Books originally written in German, or by those born in Germany, Austria and Switzerland." (Goodreads)
See how 'continental' you are in your reading by doing this challenge, emboldened by the knowledge that many of the books on the list are popular works of themselves and all have been translated into English. It is a tribute to my central European background; my mother was from Zurich and my father, from Western Poland, was also fluent in German.
The works have remarkably high average ratings on Goodreads, many above 4.0 (the source didn't seem to be infested with any bogus entries). Although the list is mostly fiction, it also includes major works of non-fiction by Freud, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Engels, Wittgenstein and Karl Marx (but, regrettably, none by Groucho).
Books 1-240 received at least 5 votes, the rest are books with a high number of ratings and/or high average rating (4.0+). Some duplicates were removed.
