The Hawkeye State is conveniently located in the upper Midwest, bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri, and as a result many birds reach the limits of their range here. The bottomlands of the Mississippi River are home to many birds typical of eastern woodlands, like Pileated Woodpecker and numerous warbler species, while the Loess Hills along the Missouri River have birds usually associated with areas further west, like Western Kingbird and Great-tailed Grackle. Additionally, prairie remnants hold small populations of Greater Prairie-Chicken.
