Combining the elements of real-world settings, fantastical but unexamined phenomenon, and unrelliable narrators, Magic realism isn't to be confused with surrealism or just plain fantasy. It functions best when it questions how we blindly accept historical and political realities and instead embraces the ambiguity of myth and culture without losing connection to the suffering of the real world.
