Markd9528's "3 Read, 1 Unread" Holiday Challenge

Markd9528, having read too much cult fiction of late, is surprised to discover that the total number of books in his challenge is exactly divisible by 4. Regardless, our long-winded superannuated academic offers you this list as his contribution to end of 2021 festivities. He feels quite proud when he observes how successive rows, ordered by author, veer between many countries, only occasionally lingering in the USA or England.
Having devoured at least 3 of each author's works, Markd9528 readily admits that most of the writers on this challenge are personal favourites. Nevertheless there are a handful of these authors whom he persists in reading, trying to work out why their books are so well received. He is also keen to see how popular his unread choices are with our esteemed list challengers.
Naturally Markd9528 acknowledges that this challenge is very heavily rigged in his favour. "So what!' he retorts. "As if anyone has read this far."
