New Hampshire has the shortest ocean coastline (18 miles) of any US state, but that small amount is enough to give the Granite State quite a boost in its bird life. Various waterbirds, from nesting herons, Piping Plovers, and terns to wintering sea ducks and alcids (puffin relatives) make use of New Hampshire's limited coastal habitat in a state where they would otherwise be almost absent. Meanwhile, in other parts of the state, such as the Connecticut Lakes region, Canadian specialties like the Black-backed Woodpecker and Boreal Chickadee can be found, while the localized Bicknell's Thrush nests on Mount Washington.
