There is a short paragraph or two for each band along with a discography (the Basis for the list). The book itself covers heavy metal bands along with bands that were important to the development of heavy metal but the bands themselves are not considered heavy metal, reading the book along side listening to the albums contained on the list would be benificial but not essential. There are a few new addtions as since the book was published quite a number of the bands have released new albums.
