The English Teacher Looks at Gothic Literature and Its Descendants - Page 3

An offshoot Of Romanticism, Gothic Literature emphasized the subjective worlds of imagination and dreams, of terror and of the subconscious, over strict rationalism. In so doing, it laid the groundwork for some of the most popular genres of fiction -
Romance, Horror/Dark Fantasy, Thrillers, and Science Fiction. It also laid out a set of moods, motifs, and narrative styles that have influenced literary forms ranging from Social Commentary to Surrealism. Our Maverick English Teacher and genre enthusiast lists 100 works, both key gothic texts and some surprising and not-so-surprising examples of lIterary works influenced by them.
