A disgruntled English teacher wanders through the wealth of popular/genre fiction and comes up with a personal list of 140 books, any or all of which could (and should ) be used as alternatives to the current canon of required reading that most students abhor and avoid. The list is arranged by genre:

71-90 Hard Boiled Crime/ Noir
91-105 Mystery/Traditional Detective
106-125 Thriller/Intrigue
