Vermont's Special Birds - Page 3

Vermont, the only state in New England without a seacoast, makes up for it with the shore of Lake Champlain along its western border and the Connecticut River valley on the east. While the bird life obviously lacks many of the seabirds found in neighboring states, Vermont nevertheless has its own treats: coniferous forests and bogs in the north are home to Boreal Chickadee and Gray Jay; Mt. Mansfield has nesting Bicknell's Thrush (while the much more common Hermit Thrush is the official state bird); the rivers and lakes act as a migration corridor for waterbirds, some of which remain to nest or winter; and the southern half is at the northern periphery for birds like Red-bellied Woodpecker and Carolina Wren.
