Whig Candidates for President

The Whig Party was a major political party in the United States in the 19th century. Two members of the party were elected to the Presidency; both dying in office. In seven presidential elections, 10 Whigs actively sought nomination. In 1836, four candidates ran for President and two for Vice-President, effectively splitting the party. In 1856, former President Millard Fillmore was nominated by both the Whig party, and the nativist American "Know-Nothing" party. In 1860, John Bell ran both as a Whig and as a member of the Constitutional Union party. The party dissolved in 1860.
