Great Ghost Stories

When I lived in England, one of my favorite holiday traditions was the reading and/or telling of ghost stories. I became fascinated by the form, and have sought out prime examples ever since.
For this list, I have restricted selections to those stories which focus on actual ghosts or other spectral apparitions. I have excluded so-called "true" ghost stories, as well as stories that focus on other supernatural events ( hence no Lovecraft, for example.) Since the true ghost story seems to work extremely well in the short story or novella form, I have included collections; however, I have avoided anthologies and have only listed collections by single authors.
