My favorite literary and movie genre is dark fantasy and Horror, especially when done well.. Here is a list of classic and contemporary horror fiction along with the various film adaptations that have been made from them. Not all of the films are good, but a surprising number are. All of these listed are worth a read or a look this Halloween season.
