Swifts, Hummingbirds and Swallows of North America

Included in this list are the North American members of the order Apodiformes - the swifts (Apodidae) and hummingbirds (Trochilidae) - as well as the unrelated but similarly aerial swallows (Hirundinidae), which are songbirds (Passeriformes). While most of the swallows are widespread throughout the continent, only one representative of the swift (Chimney Swift) and hummingbird (Ruby-throated Hummingbird) families regularly nest in the eastern half of the continent (although several western hummers, mostly Rufous, come to southeastern feeders during winter), with the rest concentrated in the western states, particularly southern Arizona. Look to the sky and the flowers, and you'll find these birds.
