Woodpeckers of North America

The woodpeckers (family Picidae) are a unique group of birds adapted to climbing up trees and drilling into the bark for insects and other food. They are a favorite of birders and non-birders alike. In North America north of Mexico, they are the only representatives of the order Piciformes, which elsewhere includes diverse tropical species such as the jacamars, puffbirds and toucans of Central and South America, the honeyguides of Africa and southern Asia, and the widespread barbets. This list includes all woodpecker species that nest north of Mexico.
