The English Teacher's Novel 100: A Personal List of Some of the Greatest Novels Written - Page 2

This is not a list of the Greatest ever written in that it does not presuppose that everything else is of lesser quality or importance. As the title suggests, these 100 novels are SOME of the greatest ever written ( in my humble opinion at any rate). Since I set the limit at 100, there were many novels I had to leave off. I tried to find a balance of novels that were of some historical and/or cultural importance, of diversity of authors in terms of race, gender, and nationality, and of genre and "literary" fiction. I don't necessarily like all of them: but all of them are worth the time and effort to read. I tried to limit the list to 1 book per author, but ultimately had to put 2 by Tolstoy on it; I avoided the same problem with Conrad by deciding that "Heart of Darkness" was a novella, not a novel.
