The English Teacher's Short List: Favorite Fiction of the American West

Our maverick English Teacher and genre enthusiast lists 25 of his favorite books of fiction about the American West. The list is purely personal, and it's compiler makes no claim that it is authoritative or a "best of..." list. He just likes the books.
Note: When he was compiling this list, our compiler had included Alan LeMay's "The Searchers", which he considers one of the finest western novels ever written. In narrowing the list, he inadvertently removed it. He shouldn't have; he should've paid closer attention.
