Important Bird Areas: Central Mixed-Grass Prairie

The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). The Central Mixed-Grass Prairie region extends from the edge of shortgrass prairie on the west to the beginning of tallgrass prairie on the east, comprising most of central Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This area has some of the best remaining habitat for Greater Prairie-Chickens and Dickcissels, with many of the continent's Interior Least Terns nesting on sandbars along the larger rivers. Seasonally, wetlands provide habitat for Sandhill Cranes, American Avocets, and Semipalmated and Buff-breasted Sandpipers on spring migration, and millions of wintering waterfowl, particularly Greater White-fronted Geese and Northern Pintails. At the region's southern end, the Wichita Mountains host a large breeding population of endangered Black-capped Vireos.
