Important Bird Areas: Mississippi Alluvial Valley

The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). This region consists of approximately 24 million acres of alluvial floodplain along the Mississippi River south of its confluence with the Ohio River, from Missouri and Kentucky to the river delta in Louisiana; prior to European settlement, this was the greatest bottomland hardwood forest on Earth. Despite significant losses since the advent of flood control and deforestation, the forested wetlands here still support an estimated 9% of North America's duck population during the wintertime. Remnant forests provide homes for nesting Swallow-tailed Kites and Swainson's and Prothonotary Warblers; colonial waterbirds, including White Ibis, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, and other herons and egrets, also nest in large numbers, particularly towards the south.
