Important Bird Areas: West Gulf Coastal Plain/Ouachitas

The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). This region is a roughly rectangular area encompassing southeastern Oklahoma, southwestern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana and easternmost Texas. Pine forest predominates, with shortleaf pines to the north (including the Ouachita Mountains) and longleaf to the south; the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker is a specialist of these forests, along with Bachman's Sparrow and Brown-headed Nuthatch. River and stream bottoms provide habitat used by nesting herons, egrets and Swainson's Warbler, along with large numbers of wintering waterfowl.
