The sites listed here come from The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States (2003). This region includes the northern Rocky Mountains and outlying ranges such as the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon, as well as the intermontane Wyoming Basin. A variety of coniferous forests dominate most of this area, with ponderosa pine the primary species in drier spots and western redcedar and hemlock in wetter areas to the west. Characteristic birds of the forest include Dusky Grouse, Flammulated Owl, Black Swift, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Olive-sided Flycatcher, while Barrow's Goldeneye, Harlequin Ducks and Trumpeter Swans can be found in accompanying lakes and streams. The Wyoming Basin is sagebrush land, home to Greater Sage-Grouse, Ferruginous Hawk, Sage Thrasher and Brewer's Sparrow.
