David Pirie: Eleven Best Science Fiction Films

David Pirie is a novelist, screenwriter, film critic, and producer. He is the author of of Mystery Story, A Heritasge of Horror and is the editor of Anatomy of the Movies. His list appears on pages 500-501 of The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction, edited by Phil Hardy, The Overlook Press, 1995 and are listed in order of preference. He calls Kubrick and Spielberg master craftsmen but lack the edge of of the writers and directors of the 1950s. "It is doubtful if there can ever again be films of such pure paranoia of my top three. Technically of course they look very rough today, but they still convey a tension that is almost impossible to recreate. And two of them have the additional advantage of the theme of alien possession, which is among the richest of all cinematic metaphors."
