Peter Nicholls: 31 Best Science Fiction Films

Peter Nicholls was an Australian literary scholar and critic who was the co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Asked to provide a top ten list for The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction, edited by Phil Hardy, The Overllok Press, 1995, he provided three, which appear on page 500 of that book. He included 31 films (32 by his count)--his first list put three Cronenberg films in one spot, and his third has only nine. So second place starts with Metropolis and third place starts with Bride of Frankenstein. Note that Hardy does not give an entry to King Kong. His comments mainly expain specific choices. His main general comment is that "The SF boom of the 1950s was great at the time, but a lot of them have not weathered well." He finds his three favorite Cronenbergs films are inseparable.
