Our maverick English Teacher and genre enthusiast looks at the loosely defined category known as the thriller. Originally called the sensation novel, and often grouped with the mystery or the action/adventure categories, the thriller is more a set of tropes and motifs than it is a specific genre; nobody can really define it, but everyone knows one when they see it.
